N\u00e9e en Haute-\u00c9gypte, Zainab Ibrahim Mahfuz arrive au Caire avec sa famille en 1932. Elle travaille dans un atelier de couture jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la mort de son p\u00e8re (elle a alors 16 ans), puis rencontre\u00a0<strong>Baadia Masabni, l\u2019inventrice de la danse orientale moderne<\/strong>, qui sera son mentor. C\u2019est dans la troupe de Baadia o\u00f9 elle c\u00f4toie Tahia Carioca, sa plus proche rivale, que Samia Gamal d\u00e9veloppe son style.<\/p>\n<p>Au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es quarante, Samia Gamal fait une rencontre d\u00e9terminante, en la personne de\u00a0<strong>Farid Al Atrache<\/strong>, un prince syro-libanais devenu un des plus grands chanteurs et joueurs de luth du monde arabe. Samia et Farid forment, \u00e0 la sc\u00e8ne comme \u00e0 la ville, le couple d\u2019artistes le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de la vie culturelle orientale de la d\u00e9cennie. Entre temps, la jeune femme d\u00e9bute au cin\u00e9ma, en 1942, dans \u00abGawhara\u00bb de Youssef Wahby. Elle devient rapidement une d\u00e9esse des comedies musicales, adul\u00e9e par des millions d\u2019admirateurs. En 1947, le couple Gamal-Al-Atrache est r\u00e9uni \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran dans \u00ab<strong>Madame la diablesse<\/strong>\u00bb, dirig\u00e9 par Henry Barakat. Le film est un \u00e9norme succ\u00e8s et les deux vedettes tournent encore ensembles, \u00e0 quatre reprises, dans: \u00abAhebbak inta\u00bb (1949) et \u00abDernier mensonge\u00bb (1949) tous deux r\u00e9alis\u00e9s par Ahmed Badrakhan, \u00abTaa la salim\u00bb (1951) de Helmy Rafla et \u00abNe le dis \u00e0 personne\u00bb (1952) de Henry Barakat. Immense star, Samia Gamal ne laisse pas insensible le Roi Farouk. Celui-ci lui octroie le titre honorifique de premi\u00e8re danseuse nationale.<\/p>\n<p>En 1952, Samia \u00e9pouse Sheppard King, un riche am\u00e9ricain, originaire du Texas. En 1954, elle profite d\u2019un s\u00e9jour \u00e0 Hollywood, pour faire une apparition dans \u00abLa vall\u00e9e des rois\u00bb de Robert Pirosh, et o\u00f9 elle interpr\u00e8te une danseuse du ventre aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Robert Taylor. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, elle incarne la jeune Morgiane aupr\u00e8s de Fernandel, dans \u00abAli Baba et les quarante voleurs\u00bb, une production fran\u00e7aise de Jacques Becker. En 1955, dans \u00abUn verre et une cigarette\u00bb de Niazi Mostafa, elle partage l\u2019affiche avec une autre belle \u00e9gyptienne, qui va \u00e9galement se faire un nom en France\u2026 Dalida. Un an plus tard, elle participe \u00e0 la production internationale \u00abLe fils du Cheik\u00bb de Goffredo Alessandrini avec Ricardo Montalban.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la fin des ann\u00e9es cinquante, Samia Gamal divorce de son Texan de mari et revient d\u00e9finitivement dans son pays natal. Elle y tourne deux de ses plus grand succ\u00e8s, \u00abZannouba\u00bb (1957) aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Shukry Sarhan et \u00abRendez-vous avec l\u2019inconnu\u00bb (1959) avec Omar Sharif. En 1958, elle \u00e9pouse en secondes noces, le jeune premier Ruschy Abaza, dont elle divorce en 1977. Ils sont r\u00e9unis \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cran dans \u00abLe deuxi\u00e8me homme\u00bb (1960) de Ezzel Dine Zulficar et dans \u00abLa route du diable\u00bb (1963) de Kamal Attia. Ce film reste la derni\u00e8re prestation cin\u00e9matographique de sa carri\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p>Par la suite, Samia Gamal se consacre exclusivement \u00e0 la danse. Elle pratique passionn\u00e9ment son art jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es quatre-vingt-dix.
